The Real Greek Lunch

Just two weeks after my last day at my office job, I found myself heading for Westfield Shepherd’s Bush at 1 o clock on a Friday afternoon. I was so excited as this was to be my first blogger’s lunch and boy was I in for a treat! I’m sure you have all seen one of The Real Greek restaurants if you are local to London, there are 9 in total and I was about to experience The Real Greek Lunch celebrating the launch of their new book. This inspired cookbook is written by the restaurant’s consultant and expert in all things Greek- Tonia Buxton.  I was so surprised when the menus came round to see the incredible variety of things which I could eat as a coeliac. Over half the menu is gluten free and so I was thrilled to see what was going to be brought to us, ordered all by Tonia who looked after us so well.

The Real Greek Lunch The Real Greek Lunch-6

It was lovely to meet the Blink Publishing team along with Tonia herself and a handful of bloggers too. It was great to chat blogging and food while we waited for our starters to arrive.

The Real Greek Lunch-4

We tried pretty much everything from the starter menu, my favourite was the Melitzanosalata, an aubergine dish which I have recreated in my own kitchen and photos are at the end so you can see!

The Real Greek Lunch-2

We tried a range of wonderful mains too, a lot of the fish I didn’t eat just because I’m not a fan of things from the sea, but the others certainly enjoyed the dishes.

I had the most amazing greek salad and chicken skewers with peppers. The stand out dish for me was a vegetarian dish called Gigandes Plaki. Giant beans in a tomato sauce went down a treat.

The Real Greek Lunch-7 The Real Greek Lunch-8

Speaking of treats, I tried something new which I had never even considered to be a dessert until this was put in front of me. It looked like yoghurt and mushrooms, but Tonia explained that it was candied walnuts. I tried one and fell in love!

The Real Greek Lunch-10

The sweet nut paired with the greek yoghurt was so moreish, it was lucky we were sharing this as I would have eaten the entire thing.

The tea was also a big hit, it’s a herbal blend called Greek Mountain tea and was so good, I have been back since just for this alone!

The Real Greek Lunch-9

What I discovered at The Real Greek Lunch, aside from the amazing tastes, was a new found repsect for Greek culture and the great importance food has for it. I loved how simple the dishes were and how we shared them out to try a bit of everything- this is definitely something I will be going back to with friends and family to show them the way of the Greeks!

As promised, here is a little something I cooked recently using The Real Greek cookbook. The Melitzanosalata recipe on p29 was so simple and easy to follow, I made the most amazing accompaniment that gave my turkey steaks and quinoa rice the perfect zing!

Food from Flora Freedom

To celebrate World Environment Day, I wanted to do something a bit different on my blog. I have previously reviewed gluten free products, and even done a step by step macaron post, but I’ve never done any of my own recipes on here before. So now is my chance to show you all that I can actually cook too! This post is all about going green and reducing your carbon footprint by using a brand new dairy/vegan friendly butter- food from Flora Freedom!

Food from Flora Freedom_-4

New analysis from the Carbon Trust in partnership with Flora Freedom has revealed the environmental benefits of reducing butter in our diets. Going dairy-free for even one day a week helps reduce our carbon footprint. New Dairy Free Flora Freedom spread is a good choice for those who favour a plant-based diet but want to add the indulgence of a great tasting dairy free spread to their meals. It is completely dairy free and contains no ingredients of animal origin, making it a spread suitable for vegans. I put it to the test and here’s what happened…

Food from Flora Freedom_-7

Recipe 1- Veggie Kebabs, free from gluten, dairy and vegan friendly

You will need:

Flora Freedom spread

kebab skewers

Peppers

Courgette

Sweet potato

mushrooms

Sweetcorn cobs

Savoury rice packs

Baby spinach

Food from Flora Freedom_-2

Chop your veggies up, not too small as we need to put these onto skewers! Start the rice first as this takes the longest. I boiled the rice for 20 mins in 1 pnt of water, and added in a little pepper and garlic salt. I also boiled my corn in a separate pan too, I did them for 15 mins.

Food from Flora Freedom_-5 Food from Flora Freedom_-6

Fry the raw veggies all up (I did peppers separate to the courgette and mushrooms) with a tablespoon of Flora Freedom and season with some jerk spice- fry until golden brown. I did the sweet potato in the microwave (5 mins), and then sliced them into round sections and peeled of the skin last, et voila!

You are ready to skewer.Food from Flora Freedom_-10

I used the baby spinach to lay the kebab on top of, so pretty! Food from Flora Freedom_-11 Food from Flora Freedom_-13 I used the Flora Freedom on my corn too! A gorgeous, vegan friendly meal in under 30 mins.Food from Flora Freedom_-15

Recipe 2-  Classic Victoria Sponge, free from gluten and dairy

You will need:

300g Flora Freedom spread

300g caster suger (white or brown)

300g gluten free, self raising flour

3 eggs

Raspberry jam

Preheat oven to 180 degrees

Food from Flora Freedom_-20

First mix the Flora spread with the sugar to create a smooth paste. Next break in the eggs one by one and stir in individually. I do all my mixing by hand as I feel that this way the cake tastes better, but you can use a mixer too 🙂 Food from Flora Freedom_-16

Then add in the gluten free flour bit by bit, and carefully fold into the mixture to lose as little air as possible.Food from Flora Freedom_-17

Once you are happy with the consistency of the mixture, separate out into 2 cake tins, and shake tins back and forth so that the mixture evens out and touches all the sides (we don’t want a wonky sponge!).

Food from Flora Freedom_-18

Place into the oven for about 30 mins. I usually don’t rely on exact timings, normally your nose will tell you when it’s just right! If unsure, stick a knife into the centre and if it comes away clean, your cake is done! Food from Flora Freedom_-19

Once cooled, take out of the tin, and add a nice layer of raspberry jam into the centre before placing the top tier on.

Food from Flora Freedom_-21

You can leave as is, sprinkle with some icing sugar perhaps, or decorate it however you like! Food from Flora Freedom_-22

So there you have it, 2 quick and easy recipes you can use to cater for allergy sufferers and vegetarians, plus at the same time you are helping to reduce the carbon footrint by switching to a dairy free spread too! It tastes just as good as your regular spread so why not try these recipes out for yourself? Food from Flora Freedom in my opinion was a great success!

The Dubai Series: Day Three

So onto The Dubai Series: Day Three – the last day of our 72 hour holiday. Let’s start with some pretty awesome hair if I do say so myself…
The Dubai Series- saharasplash-55
So I did a mixture of French braid to the nape of my neck, and then I tied them up and did fishtails to the ends. I really liked the results of this spontaneous do! I think it went really well with the look from day three.
Paul and I took a taxi to JBR, the Jumeirah Beach Resort on our last day to spend some time with each other. We had a sizeable lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, I absolutely love their raspberry lemonade! The marble table at lunch provided a perfect opportunity to show off my second pair of nail wraps from Thumbsup nails, on the Dubai Series: Day Three I’m wearing ‘Mars’.
The Dubai Series- saharasplash-56
After that, we ventured out to find a great location to do some shooting.

The Dubai Series- saharasplash-61 The Dubai Series- saharasplash-59

I’m wearing a biker jacket with chiffon fall from Her Boutique, I love how unique the jacket is with this extra bit of detail. I decided to pair this with some crochet trousers from Primark. They are super comfy and perfect for hot weather down at the beach.
We found a stunning staircase and so we took advantage!

Underneath the jacket I’m wearing a bikini from Boohoo.com

As we made our way down to the beach, we spotted some camels walking towards us!

On the beaches of Dubai on the 2nd May, Paul proposed to me…   And I said yes!!!

The Dubai Series Day Three

And there’s more too! On to my final outfit of the trip, plus a close up of my ring…

My pantsuit is from Primark, and my clutch is from Next. My engagement ring is courtesy of my mother.
I’m sure you can agree that this was a very special ending to a very special trip. I want to thank everyone mentioned in my five days of blogging, I couldn’t have done it without you. And lastly a shout out to my husband to be, thank you for supporting me, my blog and being the best camera man I could ask for!

The Dubai Series: Travel Essentials

Today’s Tuesday, and on Tuesdays we do travel essentials! Take a look at what I took with me to the airport in part two of The Dubai Series: Travel Essentials

The Dubai Series- saharasplash-6
Just Bee drinks were my drink of choice for the journey to the airport. I couldn’t take it through security with me, but the green tea and lemon gave me just what I needed for the tube journey to Heathrow Terminal 5. The honey infused water is so refreshing, Just Bee are the perfect travel essential for a thirst quenching pick me up.

As a coeliac, I’m always looking for new snacks that are easy to carry around in my handbag. I was looking to take something easy along with me for the plane, and something tasty…
Snact are a wonderful company which I have blogged about before this year. They are 100% fruit and so naturally gluten free and vegan too. I took their brand new flavour with me-  apple, blueberry and banana which was amazing.
store-packshot-blueberry
Next up for those sweet cravings are the wonderful Cocoalibre. These are a new brand I have just discovered, and just in time for my travel essentials! Also gluten free and vegan, this chocolate is super luxurious and was such a sweet treat high up in the sky! Cocoalibre comes in beautiful packaging and they really do go the extra mile for allergy sufferers with their chocolates.
cocoalibre frog
Of course we all know that your skin can suffer on longer fllights due to the change in pressue and the oxygen quality. So in my bag I had the perfect thing…
The Timeless Truth Travel Pack! This cute little travel pack is the real deal if you’re after a bit of pampering as you travel. The pack comes with three compartments, a makeup remover wipe, a cleanser and then a fibre mask. Timeless Truth think of it all with this star item!

TT tavel pack

Next up is another brand new discovery from Alpha-H. I took their marvelous Absolute eye cream with me on board as this realy helps to reduce dark circles and puffiness around the eyes. I find that my eyes can get very puffy during a flight, so Alpha-H came to my resue!

The Dubai Series- saharasplash-99

The last item on my list is something which I never knew you could take on a plane. This is Batiste dry shampoo. Of course, it has to be a travel size can, but this made my day when I found out I could take this little gem with me! I took the tropical spray with coconut scent.

So there you have it, Part 2 of The Dubai Series: Travel Essentials!

The Blogger’s Tea Party at PopUp Patio

It’s that time again, time for another Bloggers Hangout event! This event was focused on food and drink and was hosted at the Pop Up Patio in Hoxton. It was a great location for a smaller event, and I took thetrousseaudiaries along with me too!

First, to the fashion:
Bloggers -Tea-24 Bloggers -Tea-26
I’m wearing a white lace boho blouse from Forever 21 and some tan high waist wide leg trousers from F+F. I went with a funky print shoe from the M&S Limited collection to finish my look- I got these in the sale at just £8.50! Best buy of the month.

Now, onto my top 5 brands from the event:

The Cocoa Den is a company owned by Kate Burton who specialises in handmade chocolates. She creates the most intricate designs in chocolate, it was wonderful to see her creations as well as taste them too! Virtually all her chocolates are gluten free and they were so lovely! Here are my favourite designs:
Bloggers -Tea-2Bloggers -Tea

Just Bee drinks were really awesome. They have just gone through a complete brand relaunch and I was really pleased to meet them at the event. They infuse each drink with just a single drop of honey and they use the best honey from this family-orientated business. They stock in Selfridges, Fortnum and Mason or you can buy from them directly too. A 12 pack is just £19.99 and they have 3 delicious flavours to choose from:
Bloggers -Tea-3

Chikas snacks were really popular at the Bloggers Tea Party. Inspired by West African heritage this company is all about making a change for the better. Chikas snacks offer you a way to eat healthily (suitable for vegans and gluten free) and at the same time help do some good. For every subscription box ordered (starting at £4.99) you will also be paired with a child who needs support to receive an education. The snacks are so delicious, my favourite was the plantain crisps!
Bloggers -Tea-12

Drink Me Chai are the number one instant Chai drink in the UK. I know I have been guilty of spending way too much money on chai tea lattes in Starbucks in my time, and so Drink Me Chai are the perfect solution for saving money and still being able to have those luxury drinks. Much like a hot chocolate, all you have to do is add hot water or a water/milk combo to 3 teaspoons of the mixture. It’s so perfect and blended so well, it’s definitely the best instant drink I have tried. These are available in Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose for £2.50!

Tea Party-9

I reviewed these guys in my snackly box review a few months back, and it was great to try some more flavours. These snacks are 100% fruit so they are vegan and gluten free. The flavour is intense and so fruity! These are the perfect snacks for on the go, busy bloggers and for in the office too. They have also just launched a brand new flavour- apple, blueberry and banana which I am dying to try, they didn’t have it in time for the event so if I get my hands on a pack I will let you know on Snapchat and Twitter!
Bloggers -Tea-10

Thank you so much to the Bloggers Hangout team for organising such a fun event, Merrell and I had a great evening and we will definitely be blogging more about the brands there in the coming months! If you have any questions about any of the brands mentioned in this post, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter.

Brunch at The Hard Rock Cafe

I hope this post isn’t too long, but I just have so much to say about this particular spring weekend. I’m going to start with the outfit, then move onto the food and the drink because boy there was a lot of it! If you read on to find out what I got up to last weekend, I can’t promise you won’t come away feeling really hungry! You all have to go to brunch at the Hard Rock Cafe…

So first to the fashion:

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-2

I decided to go all black for the Rock and Roll brunch, black is my go-to colour and always looks classy. I’m wearing a Karen Millen crop jacket on top of a bodysuit and skirt.

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-3 Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-4

The lace skirt is from Forever 21 and my bodysuit is H&M. I accesorized with a pair of gorgeous gold heels (also forever 21) and my bag is from LYDC.

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-5 Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-6

Croc print and lace crochet really work well together!

So now onto the main event at the first ever Hard Rock Cafe to open, we queued outside and waited to be let in for 10am!

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-7 Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-8

We were seated just inside on the main floor. We had great views of the restaurant, bar and also the band setup behind us.

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-11

As well as all you can eat for food, there were bottomless mimosas, bloody mary’s, tea and coffee.

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-13

The band led by A.J Moore and Johann Tingall played 3 sets, each set to go with the 3-course brunch. They played breakfast at tiffanys and other really great classics from Journey to Wheatus!

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-12

The waiters didn’t stop moving for the whole 2 hours, they were so happy and were enjoying bringing us the food just as much as we enjoyed eating it!

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-14 Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-15 Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-16

As you know I am gluten free, and the Hard Rock Cafe really has outdone itself since getting accredited by Coeliac UK. Craig, Jonathan and the kitchen and staff have made sure that anyone looking for a gluten free meal can come and enjoy not only the brunch on Sundays, but also enjoy a main meal and dessert from their gluten free menu. For brunch, I had just as much choice as the regular customers- they made gluten free pancakes and waffles which were fabulous, and I even had fried chicken which I have never had in any restaurant since being a coeliac! This along with mushrooms, tomatoes, crispy bacon and diced potatoes saw that I didn’t need to eat another bite for the rest of the day.

Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe-18

The bottomless brunch experience was absolutely amazing, I cannot thank the Hard Rock Cafe enough for such a great time. You can book your bottomless brunch for next Sunday right now right here! They are running the brunch right up until the end of April so get in there and get stuffed! (in the best way possible)
